The construction of the Hiking Trails, Butterfly Observatory and Reception began in July of 1998 and was mostly complete by the fall of 2000. La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park is a privately owned and managed ecological attraction that opened in the fall of 2000. Please keep in mind that the park ranges in altitude from 5,200 feet to 4,200 feet so it can get chilly when the clouds roll in. What should you bring? You will need plenty of digital memory to take photos with your phone or camera!!! We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes (preferably with a thick tread for hiking the concrete paver trails and hundreds of stairs), shorts or comfortable pants and a lightweight jacket or raincoat. However, we highly recommend the guided tour (as available) to receive the most information and impact from your visit. Waterfall Gardens is primarily a self-guided tour allowing our visitors to proceed directly to their areas of interest. However, if you would like to see every trail and thoroughly enjoy the time spent in the Aviary, the Butterfly Observatory, Hummingbird Garden, Serpentarium, Jungle Cats Exhibit, Frog Exhibit, Historical Casita Experience and Trout Lake, you will probably want to stay the whole day. With over 3.5 kilometers of walking trails and educational animal exhibits to enjoy, we recommend a minimum of 2 hours for your visit. We can accommodate earlier arrivals and later departures with an advance request. ![]() to ensure that they have enough time to walk the primary trails. We recommend our last visitors to enter the park by 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with our last shuttle pick up from the exit trail at 5:00 p.m. Waterfall Gardens is open year-round from 8:00 a.m. At La Paz Waterfall Gardens, you are guaranteed to see all that and more. Open from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.When you think about Costa Rica, you probably imagine lush tropical rainforest, flowing white rivers, spectacular waterfalls, birds, butterflies, monkeys, hummingbirds, snakes, felines and frogs. It should take 10 minutes to go down and about 20 to get back up to the parking lot. There are restrooms and showers in the guest facilities atop the cliff, along with a restaurant and gift shop. Guests are encouraged to swim in the stream and small rapids below the falls, and there's a lifeguard on duty. It takes about 10-20 minutes, and there are places to stop and sit if needed. The paved hike down to the waterfall is over 500 steps along a staircase carved into the hillside. The admission is $18 for foreign adults, $9 for Costa Rican adults, and $0 for any children under 8. It is fed by the Fortuna River, which travels through the rain forest in the Arenal Mountain range until it plunges over the cliff, forming this waterfall. The waterfall drops about 70−75 meters and is at the base of the dormant Chato volcano, about 5.5 km outside of the town of La Fortuna, near the Arenal Volcano. In Spanish, it is known as Catarata Fortuna. La Fortuna Waterfall ( Spanish for "the fortune") is in central Costa Rica, in the Alajuela Province.
